Before starting RIMC preparation, students need to know what the exam actually expects them to prepare. You may see English, Mathematics, and GK and instantly think you know the syllabus, but that does not tell you much about what to actually study. The marks all these subjects carry are also uneven: Maths – 200, English – 125, and GK – 75, so simply treating all three as equal subjects doesn’t make your preparation easy either.
Two basic things you need to know: how the exam is divided into subjects and what you need to cover inside those subjects. Then there is the Viva Voce, which means the written paper does not carry the entire selection process. 1. RIMC Exam Pattern 2026
The RIMC exam has three subjects: maths, English, and GK. But they don’t carry the same marks; maths has the highest weightage, and GK has the lowest. Here is the total marks distribution:
1.1 Written Exam
The written exam has 400 marks in total, which may make it look like only the total score matters. But students are not just judged by their combined score because RIMC has a subject-wise qualifying requirement, and a student needs to clear the required level in each paper. So, you cannot completely ignore a lower-mark subject just because it carries fewer marks.
1.2 Viva Voce
Clearing the written papers is one requirement, but there are still other stages to go through. You still need to pass the viva voce, which carries 50 marks, so the written paper isn’t the only scoring part of the process. This also means you have to go through both a written and an oral assessment. Also, the viva is different from the written papers because you have to practice responding directly instead of answering on a question paper.
1.3 Medical Examination
Even after completing the written exam and Viva Voce, your admission is still subject to medical fitness. You will have to undergo a medical examination, the purpose of which is to check whether you meet the required medical/physical fitness standards for getting into RIMC.

2. RIMC Exam Syllabus
2.1 Mathematics Syllabus – 200 Marks
Maths carries the highest marks, but the paper isn’t limited to one area of mathematics. Now, Maths carries 200 marks, so it takes up half of the written paper. But the high marks don’t mean the paper is focused on one difficult area. It covers several basic and intermediate areas of mathematics:
- Number and arithmetic form one major area: number system, HCF/LCM, squares and square roots, fractions, decimals, averages, ratio and proportion, percentages, profit and loss, simple interest, time and distance, and time and work.
- Algebra is another area, including basic operations, factorisation and linear equations.
- Geometry takes up a separate part, with areas such as lines and angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and circles.
- Mensuration brings in practical measurement topics such as area and volume of common shapes, including cubes and cuboids.
2.2 English Syllabus – 125 Marks
English can look like a simple subject, but it actually checks several different language skills, and each of those skills creates a different type of question. Grammar is about how well you understand and use basic English rules of tenses, parts of speech, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and sentence structure. Vocabulary is a whole different skill; it is not just about remembering grammar rules; it’s more about knowing what words mean and how they are used.
Comprehension tests what you can actually understand from something you just read. So even if your grammar is good, reading and understanding the passage still matters.
2.3 General Knowledge Syllabus – 75 Marks
GK carries 75 marks only, so it has the lowest weight among the two other subjects. So, the difficulty is not the number of marks; it is the range of things you may need to know. The subject itself is broad because questions can come from history, geography, science, current affairs, defence, sports, and general knowledge. Unlike a maths formula or a grammar rule, current-affairs questions are linked to recent events, so you may need to work on regular awareness.
Indian awareness is an important part of the subject. History, geography, constitution or polity, and defence can all connect easily to knowledge about India. Defence is also one of the areas covered under GK; it is especially relevant to RIMC because it prepares students for a military-based environment.
